This is one of the most famous opening lines in literature.
I myself became a big Jane Austen fan ever since I first watched the 1995 BBC adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice” (Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy). Then I came to read and love her books and watch every adaptation of them that fell under my radar.
And through the years I have also enjoyed works that are based on her books.
Some ( Lost in Austen, Death comes to Pemberley, The Lizzie Bennet Diaries) more than others (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Austenland). But nevertheless, it is always a pleasure to get reacquainted with Austen’s characters.
This is why I want to tell you about “The Austen Project” !
The promotion via BookTube of “Eligible”, a book by Curtis Sittenfeld, was recently the cause to learn about The Austen Project! And let me say: Better late than ever!
The Austen Project pairs six bestselling contemporary authors with Jane Austen’s six complete works: Sense & Sensibility, Northanger Abbey, Pride & Prejudice, Emma, Persuasion and Mansfield Park. Taking these well-loved stories as their base, each author will write their own unique take on Jane Austen’s novels.
The reimagined Sense & Sensibility, Northanger Abbey and Emma are already out and “Eligible” (A modern retelling of “Pride and Prejudice”) is expected this spring.
Can’t wait for the last one!
Until next time.
